Name: Murr Hart Canon: Mahoutsukai no Yakusoku ("Mahoyaku") Canon point: Post Western Concerto Age: Mentally around 1500, physically looks like a young adult with a stupid haircut
History: The wiki is barebones so a brief summary:
Mahoyaku takes place in an anime fantasy land separated into four countries: Northern, Eastern, Western and Southern. Each country has extremely different relationship dynamics between the non-magical humans and the magical wizards (ranging from good to absolutely terrible), but all are threatened by a world-ending threat called The Great Calamity (IT'S THE MOON) that is fought every year by a group of Chosen Wizards and their isekai'd from Modern Times "leader" (referred to as the Sage).
Murr himself is... a complicated weirdo in a cast of complicated weirdos. A world renowned scholar who's delved into many different fields (astronomy, philosophy, mineralogy to name a few), Murr's most notable features and accomplishments are both eccentric and a bit (very) cursed. He invented magical science technology against the wishes of his dear friend Shylock, leveraging their homeland into prosperity at the cost of essentially ripping apart the natural state of the world. Murr fell in love with the world-ending calamity he was chosen to fight, getting so close to it and its truths that his soul was literally fragmented and scattered across the world (you read that right. He fell in love with the moon. I hate that I have to type that). The "current" Murr is the remains of that love, raised from scratch by the aforementioned dear friend into something resembling a less-shitty-more-to-his-tastes person while he keeps the fragments of Murr's soul he's found in jars. Yes, their relationship is hashtag complicated.
Nowadays, Murr spends his time fulfilling his role as one of the Sage's Wizards by quelling any disturbances that pop up around the world as a result of the Great Calamity. And, uh, he's still sometimes shitty despite being an anime catboy, but he's got his good points.
Personality:
⬥ What does your character consider to be their top 3 strengths?
If you'd asked the original, complete Murr... the response would likely be something infuriating or convoluted like "different, depending on the situation". Generally, he'd consider his intelligence and charisma as his most transferable strengths. The current Murr would likely consider his zeal and attraction for the unknown. For both, their adaptability and unflappability is a powerful boon.
⬥ What do others consider to be your character's worst weakness?
HA. Murr is consistently cited as being an unlikable but charming person, though at this point it's more of a (deserved) past reputation. He has a tendency to do and say things he shouldn't, weighing his interest and curiosity above any consequences that he's fully aware of. In the past, this was due to something resembling callous disregard; in the present, it's more the playful, harmful straightforward curiosity of a kid stating it's sooo interesting that you're scared and sensitive when you're the strongest person in the world.
⬥ How does your character interact with others?
The fragmented Murr is more childlike and charming in an amusing sense; contrast this with his past self who was a more charismatic and overly polite individual. They're both... wholly pleasant to speak to when the conversation doesn't get particularly intimate. However, Murr always has a tendency to poke deeper than he should, and any observations he makes are said with a disregard towards feelings or social tact. He's, at all times, rather blunt when the situation calls for it.
⬥ What motivates or drives your character?
Interest. Stimulation. Excitement. Murr dislikes boredom in all his forms.
⬥ How does your character spend their free time?
Murr is terrible at standing still, so he's constantly on the move looking for things that satiate his curiosity or his sense of entertainment. For now that sense isn't particularly complicated, as he finds his own fun in most things. He's essentially a cat in wizard form. One particular thing he's fond of doing is looking at the night sky -- his love is there, after all.
⬥ What is your character's greatest desire?
The moon.
Powers:
As a wizard, Murr has access to a wide variety of magic that isn't limited to the usage of offensive spells. Flight, shapeshifting, object levitation, the creation of energy replenishing sugar -- all of it is within the possible confines of magic. Different wizards have different affinities and magical strengths, and Murr's personal skill allows him to read the memories present in inanimate objects. He also has a penchant for creating fireworks, but that's more of a personal preference. In terms of magical power, Murr lays in the upper middle in terms of strength in the cast -- below the more battle-hungry and offensive powerhouses that are the Northern Wizards, but above the less experienced, younger wizards due to his age. The fragmentation of his soul also seems to have affected his magical power. Oh, yeah. Speaking of his fragmented soul -- those pieces can take on a physical form and talk due to a Moon Curse, so just in case one Murr wasn't aggravating enough... there's a ton of them around the world. Oops!
As for the source of all this power... Well, the source of a wizard's magic is tied to their surroundings, and to their hearts. This is why breaking things like promises results in the loss of a wizard's powers, and also why they're particularly sensitive to the setting around them. The importance of the mind and heart in the use of magic is described in canon to be akin to the use of a body when interacting with a particular object -- by visualizing your use of the tool (in this case, the vision of your spell), the stronger the spell will be. Wizards also live much longer than human beings, though they're not immune to death. They stop aging once they reach the pinnacle of their magical power and, when killed, leave behind a mana stone. The more powerful the wizard, the more powerful the stone. These can be consumed to increase one's abilities, but more recent applications involve using them to power magical technology. Again, Murr's invention. Imagine making something you're a battery for. :)
Despite its flexibility, magic does have its limitations. Rewinding time and reviving the dead is impossible, but one can do something like "imagine time freezing" in order to stop other people's movements... which might make the more uninformed think otherwise. It's really all a matter of imagination and the personal abilities of the wizard.
Inventory: A red beryl ring that helps to amplify his magical powers, and a moonstone that allows him to recharge it. His broomstick is also in there somewhere... Honestly he just manifests this stuff out of thin air anyway with magic, so who knows what else is hidden in his stupid sleeves.
AU Name: Johannes Kreisler AU Age: me throwing a dart 29
AU History:
A mess of a genius child born to a pair of musicians, Johannes spent the majority of his childhood jumping from interest to interest with little pause. At some point he earned a degree in a field he can't quite care to remember, intending to become a professor. Instead, he ended up publishing a series of books where an intelligent cat lives through a variety of different human-like lifetimes; these weird, charming books were mostly an amusing way to express the knowledge he was consuming, but they took off. There's currently a lull between installments... The last one published has this pesky cat reaching the stars.
Needless to say, a bit of an odd obsession developed from his research, and he hasn't quite been able to shake off this one, fervent interest to move into something else.
AU Personality:
⬥ What does your character consider to be their top 3 strengths?
As above: his adaptability, intelligence, and uniquely charming personality.
⬥ What do others consider to be your character's worst weakness?
He's, uh... he's flighty. He gets bored easily, and doesn't seem to have one particular thing that's anchored him. This, of course, has changed with recent times... but it's also caused the abandonment of one of his other ""interests"", so maybe it hasn't changed at all.
⬥ How does your character interact with others?
A mix between OU present Murr and past Murr. Johannes is charming, intelligent and garrulous -- but he's also mildly playful in a childish kind of way, as he finds amusement in Weird things. Not that said amusement lasts very long...
⬥ What motivates or drives your character?
Same as OU!
⬥ How does your character spend their free time?
Expanding his knowledge! As of late, he's been spending a large amount of time finding the best places to stare up at the night sky in the city, and I'm making a planetarium now because light pollution makes it really hard to authentically thirst for the moon, okay.
⬥ What is your character's greatest desire?
Finding something that'll grip his attention and never let it go.
